  • The No Return roguelike in The Last of Us Part 2 Remastered gains from its varied cast of people and locales in addition to its challenging gameplay features.
  • Potentially, The Last of Us-inspired roguelike mode from Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 will be modified and challenged to increase encounter difficulty and include boss fights with well-known villains.

These days, roguelikes can be found in two of the most played first-party PlayStation games, and because the trend is growing, it’s not out of the question that additional franchises may follow suit. Though The Last of Us just launched its own online game and God of War hasn’t made any announcements, it’s also conceivable that roguelikes have only been developed for games that don’t currently have any ambitions to enter the live-service multiplayer space. The roguelikes in God of War and The Last of Us are completely distinct from each other, yet Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 could easily adopt one that was influenced by the latter.

The No Return roguelike in The Last of Us Part 2 Remastered has the advantage of letting you decide which individuals and locations to include in your story, leaving the rest up to the suspenseful and exciting gameplay mechanics. Although procedural run paths might present players with unseen adversaries or horrifying, unheard-of situations, their skill with The Last of Us Part 2 guarantees that players can make the most of whatever resources they have available. One could certainly make the same case for Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, and the sequel’s roguelike may follow the same pattern.

The Plate is Full for Insomniac After Marvel’s Spider-Man 2

An online game for Marvel’s Spider-Man was canceled.
First off, it’s intriguing to discover that a multiplayer game for Marvel’s Spider-Man property was once in production, even though it’s troubling that the material was leaked through a ransomware attack that targeted Insomniac. Given that Insomniac is presumably now focusing only on single-player games, much like Naughty Dog, it seems logical that Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 would also benefit from an extracurricular game mode.

Of course, Insomniac missed a perfect opportunity to do so with Marvel’s Spider-Man 2’s upcoming New Game Plus update—and technically, it’s still on the table since Insomniac hasn’t detailed everything coming in this update yet—but the studio obviously has a lot on its plate with Marvel’s Wolverine, let alone anything else it’s already working on.

It’s still surprising that Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 didn’t have any explicit references to Wolverine in-game aside from a Miles Morales costume, and yet it’s likely that Insomniac has its head down for now. Truly, anything is possible with a team as efficient as Insomniac.

The studio clearly has a lot on its plate with Marvel’s Wolverine, let alone anything else it’s already working on. Of course, Insomniac missed a perfect opportunity to do so with Marvel’s Spider-Man 2’s upcoming New Game Plus update—and technically, it’s still on the table since Insomniac hasn’t detailed everything coming in this update yet.

Even if Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 only included a Miles Morales outfit as the only overt allusion to Wolverine, it’s nonetheless shocking, and Insomniac is probably keeping its head down for the time being. When you have a crew as productive as Insomniac, really anything is possible.

How a Roguelike Mode in Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 Could Change the Gameplay
In Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, Close Stealth was greatly simplified and rarely presented a problem outside of large-scale battles in the hunters’ complex, shrouded hideouts. Players may have had too much control over an enemy encounter thanks to Marvel’s Spider-Man 2’s web lines, which let them hang wherever above adversaries as long as a drone wasn’t in their line of sight.

Although enemies hardly ever look up in The Last of Us Part 2 Remastered’s No Return, a roguelike based on Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 could make these encounters much more difficult with challenges and mods similar to those found there. For example, Miles’ optic camouflage could be disabled, or Peter Parker could only be able to use one specific gadget in a mod.

Since only Peter and Miles would be playable in a Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 roguelike, its primary flaw would be its lack of playable characters.

Thus, it may be preferable for Insomniac to hold off on releasing a roguelike option for the time being in order to keep Cindy Moon’s Silk, the third playable Spider-Person in Marvel’s Spider-Man 3, in the game. However, boss battles are where this roguelike would really shine, surpassing even No Return in terms of potential appearances from legendary villains. Although a roguelike mode for Marvel’s Spider-Man isn’t essential, the concept has just as much value between regular stealth and combat encounters as does The Last of Us Part 2 Remastered.

Marvel’s Spider-Man 2

The sequel to 2018’s Spider-Man and its Miles Morales spin-off, Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, is a PS5 console exclusive. Insomniac’s open-world game features Peter Parker and Miles Morales as dual protagonists, with the two heroes going up against the likes of Kraven, Venom, and Lizard.
